International Medical Graduates have it more difficult than American Medical Graduates, when it comes to the match. This is a well known fact. But this should not be discouraging. In fact, an argument can be made that if the process is played correctly, you could even match into competitive specialties. ​

Many IMG’s don’t even apply because they see themselves as having virtually no chance to match into hyper-competitive specialties, regardless of how good their application looks. They could have a 270 USMLE step score and still not apply to their desired specialty for fear of not matching.

Believe it or not, you will see that if you have an average step score your probability of matching into very competitive specialities like dermatology is 30-40%. That is much higher than the zero percent chance that you would have initially thought for an IMG. In fact, it’s not bad odds at all! Now, this is not to say that you should not apply for a backup specialty, just in case you get far enough down your rank list during the matching algorithm. But give yourself a fighting chance at living the life you deserve! The cost it takes to apply to your preferred specialty is insignificant when compared to the cost of medical school, the years of study and the lifestyle that you gain if you match into your desired field. The point is, if you truly want to do a competitive specialty, and you truly think it is your passion, apply.
