Even though the USMLE Step is important and crucial to success, it is not everything. With a proper game plan, anything is possible. Dermatology is arguably one of the hardest specialties to match. Many students believe that it is not possible to match this specialty without top quartile USMLE step scores. But NRMP data shows that students with scores that are at or below the national USMLE average (at a score of 230) obtained a 70% match rate in 2018. This same graph also shows that some applicants with scores over 260 still did not obtain a match. These applicants likely had subpar game plans and thought that their stellar USMLE score alone was enough to carry them through the match.
